This small online gallery was a chance for my mother to publish a considerable portion of her portfolio onto the internet. My goal was to create a clean, backwards-compatiable website that would enable her to showcase and sell her artwork and also share her romantic and earthly poetry.
Unfortunately, at the time of construction, I did not have sufficient knowledge of the latest standards in order to create a fluid, accessible layout using cascading stylesheets and XHTML.
During a recent update, I improved backwards and forwards compatiability and also rewrote the template for the disscussion forum to simplify the usability and actually take advantage of the CSS I was using in the overall site. In addition, I transferred the entire site over to the movabletype publishing system. This way, even my parents are able to add both artwork (through a few simple embeded variables) and poetry.
My future hope is to fully convert the layout to CSS. I tried earlier, but gave up in frusteration. No trick in the book I have yet learned will allow me to reproduce the layout exactly. I come close to reproducing such a layout in this site’s default theme, but for technical reasons, I decided that it was not sufficient. I’m sure that if I nest enough divs within divs, I could reproduce the layout, but the whole point of divs and css are to reduce file size, not increase it.
