CSS Zen Garden: Atlantis

CSS Zen Garden Submission

The following was a submission to the CSS Zen Garden, a popular gallery showcasing web page layouts that rely entirely upon CSS metadata.

Actually, as I was adding elements to the composition, Dave Shea, the gallery’s director, had already implemented a slightly older rendition.

This small project was very exiciting, of course, because it still shows that I have a little bit of my old style left in me. I was starting to worry that I would be destined to create boxes (see the current design) for an eternity. However, as the old cliche goes, one must learn to think outside of the box; and in CSS-based design, thinking outside of the box is key! I have many designer’s war stories to drive this point home.

As for the design, it certainly does not have a “zen-like” quality to it. The rounded edges give it a very heavy appearance, (note to self: this is a gerund clause) clashing between ironclad modernism and early baroque mysticism. However, the piece is entitled, “Atlantis,” and who can argue against the belief that 20th century styling has not invaded the public’s imagination of this mysterious lost city?

In contrast to this featured layout, I still greatly enjoy Douglas Bowman’s insightful submission, “Golden Mean.” His effortless rythmn and clarity have been a huge inspiration for me in recent months.
